Catering with Canapés

Canapés used to be associated with cocktail style parties. However, in recent years, serving finger food has become an increasingly popular option for catering corporate events, private parties and are a very popular option for wedding food. And it’s easy to see why! Finger food provides a more diversified selection of food during the celebration than a traditional sit-down meal. Ultimately leaving those attending with a flavour smorgasbord while also providing a range of choice capable of covering all dietary requirements.

The benefits of serving canapés at your corporate event, wedding or party celebration

Canapés have long been a popular option when holding a celebration - and the popularity of serving canapés at Geelong and Golden Plains weddings, parties and corporate events continues to increase. It is easy to understand why considering finger food provides a range of benefits:

  1. Canapés provide the chance to showcase a wide range of flavours and offer a varied selection sure to impress

  2. The tiny masterpieces look great and taste delicious

  3. It offers trouble-free catering to meet a range of dietary requirements

  4. The bite sized taste-sensations are easy for your guests to enjoy while mingling

  5. Plus, finger food can eliminate space restrictions at times faced by the table allocations at a sit-down-meal event.

How many Canapés will I need per person?

A common question when planning an event with finger food is: “how many canapés will I need to order per person?”

The number required will depend on the event you are hosting. Influencing factors include whether other food will be offered, the type of event being catered and the time of day the event will be held. A rough guide is 5-6 canapés per person for any in-between-meal event. While it is suggested to offer between 8-12 savoury canapés plus 2-4 sweet canapés per person for a meal time event.

For more information about how many items to order, please read our full guide on the number of Canapés needed per person when catering.

What canapés should I choose?

It is always beneficial to select a combination of hot and cold savoury finger food options. Plus you will keep your guests satisfied if the spread incorporates some of our larger finger food choices (ie bao buns or sliders).

It is also important to make sure you are covering all tastes and dietary requirements when selecting from the finger food menu. Be sure to include a range than includes chicken, meat, vegetarian, gluten free and even seafood selections. This ensures that everyone attending will be able to find options to fit their preferences and dietary needs.

Pair together a range of options to keep all your guests happy - such as mini bruschetta, goats cheese & red onion tartlets, rice paper rolls, mini spring rolls, meatballs, chicken satay skewers, sliders, gyoza and calamari strips.

To compliment the savoury offering it is beneficial to provide a small selection of sweet finger foods towards the end of the event. Think about fruit platters, chocolate brookies, Italian cannoli or a selection of mixed slices.

How to serve canapés to guests

Canapés can be served all at once on a centralised table - allowing guests to help themselves to whatever they would prefer. This provides a casual dining experience for your guests.

Alternatively, a more popular option is to have the finger food walked around amongst mingling guests by our friendly Fed by Jed waiters. This provides a formal experience and allows those in attendance to really enjoy themselves while the canapés are passed around throughout the event.
